The Fish Market - CatFish Seller - Original Drawing
“The Fish Market - Catfish Seller” is a heartfelt pencil drawing that captures a familiar and endearing scene from daily life in Vietnam – women carrying baskets of fresh seafood, setting up their stalls at the crack of dawn.
In Vietnamese tradition, the first customer of the day is believed to bring either luck or misfortune. If they’re cheerful, quick to buy, and don’t haggle, the seller considers it a good omen – the goods will sell well that day. But if the first buyer is picky, barges on price, or leaves without buying, it’s thought to bring bad luck to the entire day's business.
This artwork not only reflects the spirit of the traditional morning market but also offers a glimpse into the cultural beliefs, livelihoods, and resilience of Vietnamese women who make a living from the freshness of the sea and the warmth of human connection.
